Cupping Therapy

Cupping therapy is a traditional Chinese therapy that has been adapted to the field of Sports Medicine. It has become so popular among professional athletes that the majority of Olympians at the 2016 Rio Olympics, including Michael Phelps, requested cupping as part of their maintenance recovery programs.

Dr Eric offers cupping therapy tailored to the unique needs of athletes and non-athletes alike. Whether you have tense or overworked muscles or are suffering from chronic pain, the ancient practice of cupping is a great therapeutic choice.

How Does Cupping Work?

Cupping therapy creates a negative pressure which draws fresh blood from the vessels into the muscles and pulls old stagnated blood and waste products out. Once brought to the surface these waste products can be expelled through the lymphatic and circulatory systems. The result is an increase of circulation, oxygen, and nutrients to tissues promoting faster regeneration and healing. Cupping is especially helpful when used in conjunction with chiropractic or acupuncture.

What are Cupping Marks?

Cupping therapy markings are not bruises and should not be painful. Bruising is caused by trauma to the body resulting in ruptured blood vessels. Cupping marks, on the other hand, are caused by stagnate blood, fluids, and toxins being pulled out of areas of injury or compromised circulation. These markings will disappear anywhere from 2-5 days after treatment depending on how compromised the tissue’s circulation is. The more frequently you cup, the less severe the marks will become as your body increases circulation to the tissues.
